Muharram: Everything you need to know about the holy month and its benefits

When is Muharram?

Muharram, also known as Muharram-ul-Haram, is the first month of the Hijri timetable and thus signifies the beginning of the Islamic year. This is the main month associated with the name of Allah - the Prophet Muhammad (saw) called it the "Holy Month of Allah" - and is, therefore, a very revered month.

It is one of the four sacred months, and its special significance can be seen in its name. The word "Muharram" means "taboo" in its true sense - for example, it is sanctified to the point that certain activities become taboo because they abuse its sanctity. The long passages of Muharram and the House of Allah (Al-Masjid Al-Haram) are both taken from a similar Arabic root. Both are sacred spaces where everything, positive or negative, weighs more on the scales.

For What Reason is Muharram so Exceptional?

"Indeed, in the record of Allah, the number of months of Allah is twelve months from the day He created the sky and the earth; four of them are holy. That is the correct religion, so don't be in the religion while deceiving oneself..." (Qur'an, 9:36)

As for restraint, Ibn Kaiser (RH) is right, "Allah chose the elite from his creation: he chose the Messenger from the holy messenger, the messenger from the human being, the messenger from the word In recognition of him (dhikr), he chose mosques from the space on earth, from Ramadan and holy months that he chose... So, worship what Allah chooses, for the wise and wise will Respect what he chooses." (Tafsir ibn al-Qaiser)

Therefore, Muharram is unique because Allah has chosen it. He ordered us not to "make mistakes" during this holy month, which means that we promise that we have pure expectations and a fair way of behaving, and make no mistakes.

What are the Four Holy Months?

Allah also chose Rajab, Dhul-Qa'dah, and Dhul-Hijjah as holy months.

Overall, one of the functional results of Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Muharram being consecrated is to allow pioneers to perform Hajj safely without fear of bandits or war. Fighting is illegal during Dhul-Qa'dah, as they are going on Hajj; Dhul-Hijjah, when they will perform Hajj in Mecca and its environmental elements; and Muharram, when they return from Hajj. This standard was maintained by the Arabs in pre-Islamic times, and Allah affirmed this standard in the Qur'an.

Rajab, during this period, is the seventh month of the Hijri timetable and remains solitary as a holy month. In general, this is to allow individuals to perform "Umrah" in Rajab when needed.

What are the Advantages of Muharram?

While many of us understand the importance of the long Ramadan, we can often overlook the holy month. In any case, they provide us with many opportunities to seek the mercy and grace of Allah, which cannot be found in other opportunities this year. They have been chosen by Allah as the best time to approach him

As mentioned earlier, our actions convey more weight during Muharram, just as they convey more weight during Kaaba and its environmental elements. Thus, there is a precious opportunity for continued reward; however, there is also the danger of sin for our horrific actions. This means that we should be extra careful about the way we behave, whether in our relationships, work, love, the efficient use of our time, or even the way we deal with happiness. With the right expectations, every activity can be turned into an opportunity to get paid!

We've put together a series of simple ways to take advantage of Muharram:

Say more Salam! This is a personal greeting from the Prophet (saw) and Heaven, such a fundamental activity can be rewarded with endless benefits and forgiveness.

A grin at everyone (even on a Monday morning). During Muharram, this basic activity will be weighed on the balance.

Give habitual Sadaqah. Hijri is the start of the Islamic New Year, so this is an ideal opportunity to set goals and develop a rewarding routine that you can benefit from throughout the year.

Improve your health with a better diet, more exercise, and a sensible rest schedule. Indeed, dealing with your health is also a rewarding activity - your body is Amanah (trust) from Allah! Changing your lifestyle can bring you countless prizes.

Seek forgiveness. Since Muharram's sins are heavier, you should ask for pardon as often as possible this month, and even root out your sins by giving water to Yemenis, a remarkable Sadaqah Jariyah.

Read more Quran. A conspicuous person is usually placed on these rundowns - but it's the ideal way to get closer to Allah during this exciting month! Ideally, focus on just 10-15 minutes a day; set yourself a period and exercise restraint! Ideally, if you develop a beneficial routine during Ramadan, you will stick to your goals this New Year.

These events don't have a clear definition for Muharram, but they are warmly suggested and it's a good idea to increase them during this popular month!

What are the suggested activities or sunnah during Muharram?

It is enthusiastically prescribed to be as fast as possible during Muharram (but the whole month of fasting is saved for Ramadan). Allah's Apostle (see) said: "The best fast after Ramadan is the holy month of Allah (Muharram)..." (Muslim)

The holiness of Muharram is so high that even the Quraish of the Jahiliya (forgetting) era were accustomed to fasting on certain days. One such day is Ashura (the tenth day of Muharram), which observes that Allah (SWT) liberates the Prophet Musa (as) and his relatives from the obligations of the pharaoh:

Allah's Apostle (see) said that fasting on the arrival of "Ashuras" "pacifies the petty sins of the previous year" (Muslims). Therefore, people enthusiastically stipulate fasting on this day.

The Prophet (see) likewise encouraged us to separate his Ummah from the scripted as soon as possible on the ninth day of Muharram and the other eleven days, as we may know that following his Sunnah contains great gifts. We have another blog post on Ashura to familiarize yourself with this astounding day, from its series of experiences to its various benefits.

Is it Advisable for me to Offer Zakat During Muharram?

Zakat is collected from Ummah on the first day of Muharram during the time of the Prophet (saw), although it is not specifically recommended to pay zakat in Muharram. The expanded prize for honoring the seasons favored by Allah is one of the reasons why so many Muslims around the world decide to offer zakat in Muharram or Ramadan.
